Heroes of HistoryPart 3
George Washington
On February 22nd, 1732, George Washington was born to Augustine and Mary Ball Washington. He was an excellent general and the very first president of the United States. George had five siblings. As young as eleven years old, George Washington inherited slaves to work on his family’s plantation.
His first job was at the age of 16 as a surveyor. George Washington was paired up with George Fairfax and they started surveying the county of Culpeper, Virginia. Culpeper is 67 miles away from Mount Vernon, where he grew up.
At the age of 21, he joined the army, and on June 14, 1775, he was chosen by John Adams to serve in the militia to draw other southern states to join in the fight. He served in the House of Burgesses from 1758 until 1776. On January 6th, 1759 George Washington married Martha Dandridge Custis. On April 30th, 1789, he was sworn in as the United States' first president. He served two four-year terms and refused to serve another term because he wanted a democracy instead of a monarchy like Great Britain. George and Martha both served in the Anglican Church which was the prominent Christian church at the time.
His legacy will live forever as one of the best presidents in history and as the first leader of The United States of America.
